The Area

Lying between Mt. Fuji and the Pacific Ocean, Hakone is an area of high mountains with Lake Ashi nestling in the center and Mt. Fuji nearly always in view to the northwest.

A mere hour southwest of Tokyo, Hakone is the city's playground. Tokyoites come here to breathe clean air and get in touch with nature. The resort area has something for everyone: hiking, boating, hot springs, golfing, art museums and beautiful scenery.

Sightseeing
  • Hakone Shrine - Constructed in 757 A.D., this was the home of the three guardian gods of war and the place of worship for many warriors in the Kanto area.
  • Lake Ashi - A dramatic crater lake that emerged over 400,000 years ago. Breathtaking reflections of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding mountains on the lake's surface. Cruises daily.
  • Hakone Art Museum - Excellent Japanese ceramic collection and garden.
  • Narikawa Museum - Collection featuring 1,500 works of modern Japanese painters.
  • Hakone Open-Air Art Museum (next to Chokoku-no-Mori station) - Private museum focusing on 19th- and 20th-century sculpture. Includes a collection of Pablo Picasso's sculptures.
  • The Old Hakone Checkpoint and Museum - Reconstructed in 1965, this checkpoint was operated by the Tokugawa shogun government from 1619 to 1869. The museum displays a selection of samurai artifacts.
  • Hakone Glass-no-Mori - A popular Venetian glass museum in Sengoku-hara.
  • Hakone Marshland - Besides the colorful flowers and plants, the skunk cabbage blossoms are especially beautiful in April.
  • Ohwakudani - The ravine is the result of the eruption of the Mt. Hakone volcano.
  • Old Hakone Road - This pebbled road is designated as a national historical site.
